Most Reverend V. James Weisgerber
Archbishop of Winnipeg
President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

It is hard to see how any legislation legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide would protect the most vulnerable in our society. Euthanasia and assisted suicide, by their very nature, mean there is no longer a common duty for all to protect the lives of others.
Bloc MP Francine Lalonde has once again introduced a private member's bill to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada. As a result, the Parliament of Canada is soon expected to debate Bill C-384, an Act to amend the Criminal Code (right to die with dignity). To read the position of the Catholic Bishops click here.

Canadians are not sure about legal euthanasia, says the president of a group that has commissioned a new Environics poll on the subject. “Outside of Quebec support drops dramatically and is tempered by fears about how vulnerable groups will be affected,” says Delores Doherty of LifeCanada. “The idea that Canadians are clamouring for euthanasia is not accurate, despite the impression that may have been left from some polls.” >>more
